Responsibility Under Uncertainty: Which Climate Decisions Matter Most?

چکیده
Abstract We propose a new method for estimating how much decisions under monadic uncertainty matter. The is generic and suitable measuring responsibility in finite horizon sequential decision processes. It fulfills “fairness” requirements three natural conditions measures: agency, avoidance causal relevance. apply the to study matter stylized greenhouse gas emissions process which maker repeatedly faces two options: start “green” transition decarbonized society or further delay such transition. account fact that climate are rarely implemented with certainty their consequences on global economy uncertain. discover “moral” approach towards making — doing right thing even though probability of success becomes increasingly small rational over wide range uncertainties.

Projecting species’ vulnerability to climate change: Which uncertainty sources matter most and extrapolate best?
Species distribution models (SDMs) are commonly used to assess potential climate change impacts on biodiversity, but several critical methodological decisions are often made arbitrarily. We compare variability arising from these decisions to the uncertainty in future climate change itself. We also test whether certain choices offer improved skill for extrapolating to a changed climate and wheth...
متن کاملSequential Climate Decisions Under Uncertainty: An Integrated Framework
In this paper, we present an integrated framework for structuring and evaluating sequential greenhouse gas abatement policies under uncertainty. The analysis integrates information concerning the magnitude, timing, and impacts of climate change with data on the likely effectiveness and cost of possible response options, using reduced-scale representations of the global climate system drawn from...
متن کاملDecisions Under Uncertainty: Probabilistic Analysis for Engineering Decisions
Uncertainty is an essential and inescapable part of life. During the course of our lives, we inevitably make a long series of decisions under uncertainty – and suffer the consequences. Whether it be a question of deciding to wear a coat in the morning, or of deciding which soil strength to use in the design of a foundation, a common factor in these decisions is uncertainty. One may view humanki...
متن کاملInconclusive Quantum Measurements and Decisions under Uncertainty
We give a mathematical definition for the notion of inconclusive quantum measurements. In physics, such measurements occur at intermediate stages of a complex measurement procedure, with the final measurement result being operationally testable. Since the mathematical structure of Quantum Decision Theory (QDT) has been developed in analogy with the theory of quantum measurements, the inconclusi...
متن کاملCritical Decisions under Uncertainty: Representation and Structure
How do people make difficult decisions in situations involving substantial risk and uncertainty? In this study, we presented a difficult medical decision to three expert physicians in a combined “thinking aloud” and “cross examination” experiment. Verbatim transcripts were analyzed using script analysis to observe the process of constructing and making the decision, and using referring phrase a...
